“I’m glad we could catch you before going back home tomorrow.” Mama hasn’t stopped smiling since getting here. I decided to have her and Quincy over because Ameka left for an outing with some friends visiting the area. The idea and details were finalized when Quincy mentioned he’d planned a night out in the Bay for the love of his life. He’s so extra at times.

Yesterday one on one with Ben jump-started something in me. He’s a brilliant man with a passion I have yet to come across since being an entrepreneur. We made connections, pieced together some ideas and goals to meet within the coming months. He gave me more to look forward to, thanks to Ameka.

“Yeah, me too.” We sit on the open terrace, taking in the cityscape that comes more and more to life as time passes. The sunset has me reflecting on the past 48 hours with Ameka. She makes being myself easy. And I’m particularly fond of her likeness to reading different genres of books. Ameka suggested we start reading a book series together when she saw me take a liking to the plethora of books located downstairs on the bookshelf. This trip provided more than a business opportunity. It allowed us to take a break from our norm and bask in renewing our energy and enjoying being present with each other.

“Who’s the woman you’re staying with?”

“Huh?” I asked Quincy. He caught me off guard.

“The Prada wristlet dangling off the chair in the foyer.”

“Oh, my bad. Her name is Ameka Champion.”

Mom sits up for this conversation. She’s been at me, petitioning for me to settle down and bring her grandchildren. Quincy has a son, Enrique, who’s in law enforcement. Ever since he and his wife got pregnant with twins, my mom has been lurking. The joys of being an only child. “That’s not the only thing I notice, Quincy,” Mom says as if this is a conversation between the two. “Emery has been disconnected from us for a while. It’s not a bad thing, just an observation. He’s been more open to the social life. Even a little more trusting. I think this is a good thing.” She wiggles her brows to her husband. Both of their noses wrinkle in response to the joy strumming her vocals.

“You two are moving ahead of yourselves. Ameka is the owner of ARC Marketing & Branding Firm. She’s helping me become a nationally recognized nonprofit.”

“Oh!” Mama takes another sip of her favorite red wine. “How’s that working out with your new closeness?”

“I get how this may look, both of us under one roof for a business meeting, but it works out well.” I wouldn’t lie to her in her face like there wasn’t more. Still, I wouldn’t admit it either. Like she used to say back then, “I’m not your little friend, Em. Stay in a child’s place.” So today, I’d take her banter to heart. I chuckle at the thought, leaving the two confused. Hell, I burst out in a gut-wrenching laugh.
